After the Greek colonization, Ephesus (as the successor to Apasa, capital of the state of Arzawa) became one of the 12 Ionian Cities. When Asia Minor was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 133 BCE, Ephesus became the  capital of the new province of Asia. Excavations and conservation over the past 150 years have revealed monuments of the Roman Imperial period in Ephesus.

The old processional way, the Library of Celsus and terrace houses are some of the remains that you can visit today. You can also see the remains of the famous Temple of Artemis, one of the ‘seven wonders of the ancient World.

Church of Mary, House of Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John from 5th century CE are among the places where one can visit in Ephesus Area
